I know these guys from the graphic design faculty. We used to hang out at the neighbouring stationery shop where the owners would allow students to use the space for class-projects and assignments. The soundtrack of those times were GnR’s ‘Use Your Illusion’, Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’, Pumpkin’s ‘Gish’, Suede’s eponymous debut and follow-up Dog Man Star. Ramodiaz and weishein talked constantly about their love for The Cure, Jane’s Addiction, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus And Mary Chain.

I guess it’s safe to say that this EP allows these two fellas to pay homage to their influences. U2’s ‘All I Want Is You’, Kraftwerk’s ‘The Model’ and OMD’s ‘Souvenir’, and even the Batman Theme, are all reworked to Southeast Asian electronica in their Ode EP. Urban beats are mashed with traditional Siamese and Balinese percussion, with shoegazily distorted vocal rendition, supported by melodic chimes, bells and such. Understated, but definitely with an understanding and cleverness of synth-pop and guitar-rock staples. It’s hard to describe the music without pegging it to a certain genre, but it’s our generation’s elevator and lounge music, possibly from a movie soundtrack. This is what art-school does to you.
